Ben’s Bees Organic Beeswax Lip Balm

Beeswax: it’s a super-substance that’s hugely popular today among health, wellness and nature lovers. But its miracle potentials aren’t a new phenomenon. Let’s travel back to the 18th century when small pox left scars and disfiguration on the faces of those who contracted the disease. Beeswax was applied to the skin to smooth complexions. The story goes that if someone got too close or was staring for a long period of time at your pockmarks, you might retort that they should in fact “mind their own beeswax” instead of staring!

From this story, we begin to see some of the long-standing cosmetic uses of beeswax. But what is beeswax exactly? Along with honey, propolis and royal jelly, beeswax (cera alba) is produced by honey bees. It comprises mainly of esters, fatty acids and long-chain alcohols, and is made in the eight wax-producing glands on the abdomen of female worker bees. When she excretes the substance, wax “scales” are formed. These are then collected by workers to form cell structures in the hive for honey storage and larval and pupal protection.

Today, beeswax continues to be a wise choice of ingredient for natural beauty and health products. Cosmetics can be made using beeswax as it is conditioning, contains healing agents and acts as a barrier to moisture. And with winter coming, I decided to think about the ailments that will need a good dose of Ben’s Bees beeswax. I work outside for most of the day, and so I am always at risk of the elements wreaking havoc on my skin generally, but what came to mind first are, of course, painful, chapped lips.

Now don’t worry, I did my research first. Of course, there’s petroleum-based balms, but that’s an unsustainable, oil-based products, so not really for me. I found some natural options too—in 1829, Lydia Maria Child wrote a book called ‘The American Frugal Housewife’ where she recommended the use of earwax to treat cracked lips! No. Thank. You.

Beeswax has been used as a soothing balm since Cleopatra smeared in on her lips in ancient Egypt. In the 1880’s, Charles Brown Fleet wrapped a wick-less candle in foil to rub on lips, but the product still needed much refining. In the 1900’s, companies from Sweden to Japan started to incorporate beeswax into their balms, realising the worth of this incredible ingredient. But today, I have looked into all the best recipes to bring you Ben’s Bees Organic Lip Balm. The skin on your lips is super thin, which makes it very susceptible to damage in the elements. This product will rejuvenate parched lips, in both the warmer and cooler months of the year, leaving your lips hydrated and luscious. You can purchase yours here.
